Statement – International Women’s Day 2023

The International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.

This year, the theme for International Women’s Day, 8 March, 2023 (IWD 2023) is, “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality”, highlighting the role of innovative technology in promoting gender equality and meeting the health and developmental needs of women and girls.

Noticeably, a persistent gender gap in digital access keeps women from unlocking technologies full potential. Women´s underrepresentation in technologic high education and careers remains a major barrier to their participation in tech design and governance.

We celebrate gender equality with the conviction that women are to take an equal part in technological innovations and access to the broad spectrum of digital services at par with men. Whilst gender equality involves an equal treatment of women and young girls, it also entails an equivalent access to assets and opportunities. Discrimination in the cyber space can be as valid and pernicious as discrimination against women in the real world. In the contemporary context, access to virtual assets and Information Technology facilities has become a necessary factor for women empowerment and socio-economic development.

The Forum of Parliaments of the Member States of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-ICGLR) therefore joins women globally in celebrating this year’s International Women’s Day.
