Press release of the 7th Statutory Meeting of the Committee on Peace and Security and the 22nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Committee of FP-ICGLR

Kinshasa, October 17, 2020: The Forum of Parliaments of Member States of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-ICGLR) is organizing the second part of the Seventh Statutory Meeting of the Committee on “Peace and Security” on October 26th, 2020 and the first part of the Twenty-Second Ordinary Session of the Executive Committee of the FP-ICGLR on October 29th, 2020. These meetings will take place by video conference due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from 14h00 to 16h00, Kinshasa time (GMT+1) and they have been dived into two segments because of time limit occasioned by video conferencing.

The FP-ICGLR is an inter-parliamentary organization composed of 12 National Parliaments of the ICGLR Member States namely the Republic of Angola, the Republic of Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, the Republic of South Sudan, the Republic of the Sudan, the United Republic Tanzania, the Republic of Uganda and the Republic of Zambia.

The main objective of the FP-ICGLR is to make a significant parliamentary contribution to the implementation of the Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region.

The second part of the Peace and Security Meeting will focus on the research report on «Managing Cross-border Conflicts in the Great Lakes Region: Way Forward » and the preliminary draft resolution on stopping cross-border conflicts and ensuring the security situation in the Great Lakes Region. The border areas of some ICGLR Member States have, over the years, been a major arena for a variety of conflicts, some of which are linked to wider cross-border and regional conflicts. It is within this context that FP-ICGLR has identified this area for discussion in a bid to contribute to the management and resolution of the conflicts. The first part of the 7th Statutory Meeting of the Committee held early last month hinged on the Impact of Covid-19 on Peace and Security in the Great Lakes Region.

On the other hand, the first part of the Twenty-Second Ordinary Session of the Executive Committee will focus on the Activity and Financial Report of FP-ICGLR for the past nine months as well as reflect on the Effects of Covid-19 on the Operations of FP-ICGLR.

The Executive Committee is an organ of FP-ICGLR responsible for coordinating the activities and the functioning of the organization.
